Managing and Preventing Lost Horse Shoes
Lost shoes can be a headache for both horse owners and farriers. While shoes are designed to stay on, sometimes they do come off. If your horse loses a shoe, it's essential to contact your farrier as soon as possible to have it replaced.

How to Help Avoid Lost Shoes:
Regular Shoeing:
Follow your farrier's advice and schedule regular shoeing appointments to keep your horse's hooves in optimal condition.
Avoid Muddy Conditions:
Try not to turn your horse out in muddy conditions, as the wet, soft ground can loosen the shoes.
Watch Out for Fencing:
Avoid paddocks with stock fencing. Horses often paw at the fence, especially if another horse is nearby, and this can easily pull off a shoe. This is a very common issue!
Use Overreach Boots: Very important !!!
When turning out, use overreach boots to protect your horse's shoes. Slightly oversized boots can be even more effective.
Monitor Your Horse's Behaviour:
If your horse is very active in the paddock, running around or playing energetically, it’s likely to pull a shoe. Consider bringing them in to prevent this.
If Your Horse Does Lose a Shoe:
Protect the Hoof:
If your horse casts a shoe, protect the exposed hoof, especially if it has weak feet. Tape the foot with duct tape or use a hoof boot to prevent damage and avoid riding until the shoe is replaced.
Regular Hoof Care:
Use regular hoof oil and a quality hoof supplement to maintain your horse's hoof health. Keeping the hooves in top condition can help prevent shoes from coming off.
By following these guidelines, you can help prevent lost shoes and ensure your horse's hooves remain healthy and well-maintained.
